Skyrim is a time consuming game. I know I'm not alone in saying I constantly find myself looking for more time in the day. There is never enough time to read the books I want to read, or learn what I want to learn, or play the games that I want to play.
This means that earning money in Skyrim can be a bit of a feat for you weekend and casual gamers. With the lack of time required to yield any respectable amount of Septims, a player can find it difficult to find the motivation to play. Having junk equipment sucks. In this Null Byte, we're going to hack our gamesaves using hexadecimal to give ourselves a much needed boost in money.
Requirements
- PC or Xbox game save
- Some Septims (at least 2)
- A game saved near two barrels or other identicle storage chests
- Game saved to a thumb drive (if playing on Xbox)
- A hex editor—we will be using the most common hex editor, Hex Workshop. I like wxHexEditor and HxD. The principals are nearly the same, so you could use another editor if you would like.
- Horizon installed (Xbox users)
We are going to need two identical objects, like vases or jars. This is so that when we examine the game in hexadecimal, we can verify which item our gold is in. Make sure that they are both empty with nothing other than your gold.
Step 1 Place the Gold in the Container
- Split up your gold evenly between the two barrels. If you have an odd number, just keep the rest in your inventory.
- Save your game.
- Extract the game save .dat file to your desktop. You can learn how to do it here.
Step 2 Edit the Save
- Open your extracted Savegame.dat in Hex Workshop.
- Edit your search options to:
Type: 32 Bit Signed Long
Value: <amount of gold in one barrel>
Hex: Automatically generated from Value
Options: Find All Instances, Little Edian
Direction: Down - When you find multiple instances of your value in hex, make sure the hex preceding it matches only one of the other values. The preceding hex is the barrel value, and the 4 sets of 2 numbers that follow are the gold.
- Make a new gold value in hex. FF:FF:FF:00 is 16,777,215 gold.
- Drag the new .dat file back to the contents location in Horizon and replace the old one.
- Click Save, Rehash, and Resign.
When you start your game back up, check both barrels. One of them should have a huge amount of cash in it. Have fun!

Not to put any emphasis off the hacking your game saves for money thing.. But neither money nor items are hard to get in Skyrim O_O
Money was so hard for me to get my first ~25 levels. I still only have 10k. I still can't spend it freely. I've yet to buy any weapons, armor, or items of any kind from a shop xD. I've only spent money on training and spells.
Really? I found that skyrim was one of those games where it didn't seem to matter what I did, I never ran out of money.. By level 25 I had bought my way to 100 smithing, owned the house in Whiterun (fully upgraded) and had about 40 000 gold sitting in my inventory. You shouldn't be buying weapons or armour from shops, so good on you for that :P

Questions: How do you go about making money?
Do you do quests? Do you steal? Do you sell absolutely everything? Do you hunt dragons for their bones and scales?
Hunt dragons, mostly. I sell everything, yeah. But I just have been doing side-quests. Nothing major. Thats probably my issue. I've pretty much only delved into Winderhold stuff. I do the same with the weight to gold ratio rules xD.

@bird and bear dude I'm prolly the biggest pack rat on skyrim, I have chests all over white run filled with loot.
if you enter a shop and find a pricy item, if you right click your name and drag it over, then proceed to "sell" it, you get free money. it's rather game breaking though.
I personally sold every piece of everything, following some simple gold/weight rules for grabbing loot, and in earlier levels when I needed money I hunted dragons for their bones and scales. I found this to be more effective than anything else for weighing your pants down with gold.
You do know that if you go ask the greybeards about words of power, they will tell you where you can find one, and it is frequently at a perch? Easy way to find dragons. Or ruins full of loot and stuff.
I've not done the main quest at all, I've just run around doing misc. quests :D.
Yea, you don't have to go too far. Just get the horn of Jurgen Windcaller and then talk to the greybeards about words of power. It's pretty handy.
Yeah, it's right before I'm supposed to run up the mountain to go see the greybeards. I think I may do that sometime this weekend ;d.
I don't know why, but for some reason every time I do the Ctrl + F and run it, I get at least 25 instances (the highlighted code). I'm not sure which to edit so I edit them all, and that corrupts my save.
If I only edit the first one, it never does anything. I guess I could go through and edit each one and then test it, but that would be such a hassle. Does anyone know exactly what it's supposed to look like?
I've followed each step accordingly; I put 84 septims (gold) among two barrels, meaning that I put 42 gold in each barrel. The barrels are right next to one another and they are completely empty besides the gold in them. I just don't get it.
I've followed every step yet still nothing happens. It's so annoying. Someone please help!
If you're going to cheat for gold you might as well do the easy way:
hit your ` or ~ key (near the 1 on your keyboard)
type the following line replacing X with the amount you want
player.additem X f
hit the same key you used to get into the console.

Careful, use of the console commands is addictive and highly game-breaking if you do it often enough. I know, after I finished all the big quest lines, bought every home, did side quests for a while and got all the shout words, I then unlocked every perk, got all the spells I didn't have yet, teleported to Pelagius' Mind and changed my skin to that of a dremora so I'ld have demon horns.
