Forum Thread: Can You Clone One Hardrive to Another?

Atm I have one 500 gab in my pc, and Windows 8.1 installed on it, but I will be getting a 1tb hardrive soon, and was wondering is it possible to clone the 500gb to the 1 tab so I won't have to reinstall when I get it, I want the Windows on the 1tb. If I can how so

Is the 1tb going to be internal or external?

If you live boot into Linux with a USB drive, and connect the external drive, you should be able to use dd to copy the disk image over. Make sure you know what you're about to do before you press enter!

Note: I'm not sure about the legalities of "copying" a Windows installation.

You will need some way to access this harddrive. You could purchase a USB enclosure, either a cheap one, or one with a cloning feature already built in.

Oh that's true, I misread it. It is definitely necessary to have both disks connected to the same machine simultaneously.
