Not sure about the database connection but as for the permission denied its just a clever reference to the movie Jurassic Park.

before starting msfconsole, run the following commands in a terminal:

service postgresql start
service metasploit start

The one is a reference but the database thing is because postgresql isn't running. As said in the comments already. The Metasploit Framework have a bunch of clever references ;).
