Forum Thread: Kali Linux Problem...

Hi, my name is Shadow Mask. I installed Kali Linux, and tried to update.

But i keep getting this message:

kali $ apt-get update
reading package lists....done
E: could not open lock file /var/lib/apt/list/lock - open (13: permission denied)
E: unable to lock directory /var/lib/apt/lists/

I am not sure what to do...

Can anybody help me?

Since 2020.1, kali has switched to a default non-root user. This means that you need to either type sudo su and then the password to enter a root terminal or type sudo apt-get update to execute the command as root. Either way you will have to provide your password.

Yep, sudo apt-get update or sudo apt update should solve your problem.

Excellent!!!
Thanks guys!!!
I real appreciate it.

I typed the command: sudo apt-get update.

And i received a message, that said:

"We trust you have received the usual lecture from the local system administrator. It usually boils down to these three things:

#1) Respect the privacy of others.
#2) Think before you type.
#3) With great power comes great responsibility.

{sudo} password for kali:

But when i try to put my password.
I cannot.
I try to type, but nothing happens.
It is like the screen freezes.

That's OK :) it's how it's supposed to be. When typing your password in a terminal, it seems as if you are not typing it. Just type your password (it won't show anything, not even little asterisks). After you have finished typing your password just press enter.

Thanks, BIONIC!
much appreciated!
