Is It Possible to Hack Directly into a Router with Metasploit (Or Something Else) To Watch All Their Traffic?

AND be able to continue watching it, even while not on their network? Perhaps sent to a server not on the network or something?

I was told some metasploit payloads may work on routers. Would this be an easy task to watch all their traffic from anywhere?
