Kali Encrypted Internal with USB Boot Key (Help)

using this guide at pg 80 i recently tried to install kali 32bit with encrypted hard disk and a USB boot key.

(guide is for ubuntu but it is almost identical to kali setup)

all went smooth then upon boot up i am presented with a black screen and flashing cursor. in the guide it says it is a common error in grub and an easy fix with grub:rescue mode (appendix). However I am unable to access rescue mode: no option in my live USB install under advanced options. I also tried to enter rescue by typing boot:rescue at the boot menu. but nothing.

Any and all help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
