Welcome to another Community Byte announcement! For the past few Community Bytes, we coded an IRC bot, and hacked it. Then, we created a web-based login bruteforcer! This week we are going to start something a bit different. We are going to start going through the missions at HackThisSite one-by-one each week, starting with the basic missions.
HackThisSite is a free, legal, and safe practicing ground for aspiring hackers. HackThisSite has their server set up with many example websites and various other missions that range nearly all hacking categories. It is a place where you can test your knowledge and learn new things without having to worry about legal reciprocation, so you can actually learn without doing anything illegal.
Join this Community Byte, and idle in IRC!
Prerequisites
- Common sense.
- An IRC client, like XChat.
- An account on HackThisSite.
Types of Missions
- Basic missions.
- Realistic missions.
- Application missions.
- Programming missions.
- Phonephreaking missions.
- Extbasic missions.
- Javascript missions.
- Stego missions.
- IRC missions.
How Does this Work?
We will be using IRC to round people up before we begin. If you're new to IRC, go here to learn how to set it up and use it. On IRC, I will walk everyone through the mission and give you all of the resources and hints you need to solve it. If no one can solve it, I will show you how to do it, and why the exploit works.
When Does it Start?
This will take place every Friday at 5:00 pm PST, so be in IRC around that time.
Project Goals
- Learn basics to hacking.
- Open the doors for you to learn more on your own.
- Learn different classes and kinds of exploits.
- Bring the community together and teach each other new things!
- Get more people in IRC.
Get everyone you can to join IRC and start posting in the forums! Don't be shy, we don't bite, and the more people who idle 24/7, the more fun it is for all of us! I'm always there, so come say hello.

When you actually do the hacking bit, are you sitting at the computer sweating, typing at some rushing wall of coding, and firewalls flash bright red? If its anything less than a heart-pounding experience I'll feel greatly deceived by the cinematic industry.
It's just like that, the feds are busting down your door right as you toss your hard drive into the microwave and plead the fifth.
Slight problem, as I am at a boarding school for HS... I can not connect to hackthissite.org due to them blocking all our internet connection and ports.... I can connect through my friend's google proxy but I can not sign in...What do i do?
If you become active in IRC we can give you a free SSH shell.
Ok, time to fire up Xchat again...
