I was wondering if there was some way to hack the FM Radio of my rooted android device to bypass the restrictions of frequency range of 87.5 to 108 MHz to 'listen in' on other radio transmissions and convert it into a super cool Radioscanner !! :D
Searching on the web, I found this app :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2402380
but have no idea how to set it up.
I would be glad if someone could help.
PS: Spare me if the question seems off-topic, but I genuinely believe this is the community where I am likely to find people sharing my interests.

This is the same process for installing all apps off of Google Play.
Ok, Reading from the link you provided.
If you are on a KitKat Touchwiz ROM, download the HybridRadio file and rename to HybridRadio.apk.

I haven't tried it yet but the instructions seems easy and promising. All it requires is rooted phone and a root browser.
