If you're new to linux it's a fair question to ask, and the answer is yes you could erase your hard disk and lose Windows if you're not familiar with partitioning and installing an operating system set up as a dual boot system. There are safer ways of trying Kali and other operating systems. Firstly, the easiest would be to boot from a live version of Kali installed on a USB flash drive, and the second would be to install Virtual Box and run Kali "virtualised" within windows, though it can be a little difficult to configure. From personal experience I'd suggest a third option which is investing in an SBC like a Raspberry Pi. You can then run a dedicated Kali installation with little outlay.
