Safest Environment for Beginner: VM vs Live USB Boot

Hi everyone,

I am a complete beginner in the field and and was wondering what the safest environment is to begin experimenting: running Kali through VM or through a Live USB Boot? For example if I would get infected by some malware, which option would be the safest for it not spreading to my host machine?
