Have you used airmon?
Since you are running your Kali Linux on a VirtualBox, you will have to use an external adapter. You cannot use your in built wireless card. I would recommend 'Panda Wireless PAUO6'. Although, I, myself haven't used it yet. But I have read good reviews about it.
With VBox you need to shut the VM down, click the settings button, go to Network, drop the little box down and click bridged adapter. You shouldn't need to buy anything. Bridged adapter just extends the host machines network to Kali or whatever VM you are using. Hope this helps.
